The Heritage Diary

Jajpur was the capital of the Bhaumakar and Somavamsi dynasties. It is mentioned in the Mahabharata as Viraja Tirtha. The region is dotted with ancient Buddhist sites like Ratnagiri and Udayagiri, part of the famous "Diamond Triangle" of Odisha.

Local Landmarks

  • Biraja Temple: One of the 51 Shakti Peethas, dedicated to Goddess Biraja. The idol is unique as a two-armed Durga slaying Mahishasura.
  • Ratnagiri & Udayagiri: Ancient Buddhist monastic complexes with stupas and exquisite sculptures.
  • Kusuma Sarovar: A beautiful tank recently renovated for tourists.
  • Dasaswamedha Ghat: A historic ghat on the Baitarani river, considered very holy.

Taste of the Land

  • Chhena Jhili: A sweet delicacy originating from Nimapada but popular here too (actually Nimapada is Puri, but Jajpur has similar sweets).
  • Local River Fish: The Baitarani river provides fresh fish which is a staple.

Local Heroes

  • Generally, the rulers of the Bhaumakar and Somavamsi dynasties are the historical heroes who built the magnificent structures.
