Jharsuguda is an industrial giant in western Odisha. With rich coal deposits in the Ib Valley and numerous power plants, it drives the state's energy needs. It is also home to the Veer Surendra Sai Airport, connecting western Odisha to the rest of the country.

The Heritage Diary

The region was a hub of resistance against the British. The legendary freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai operated in this region (and Sambalpur), waging a guerrilla war against the colonial rulers. The district has prehistoric rock art sites nearby.

  • Koilighugar Waterfall: A picturesque waterfall located in the Lakhanpur block. There is a Shivalingam inside the fall which is only visible in summer.
  • Jhadeswar Temple: An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
