Khordha is the administrative heart of Odisha, housing the state capital, Bhubaneswar. It is the most urbanized district. It holds a special place in history as the last independent fort of India against the British.

Khordha was the capital of the Bhoi dynasty kept the flame of independence alive. The Paika Bidroha (1817), led by Buxi Jagabandhu, started here and is considered by many as the First War of Indian Independence. Bhubaneswar, the "Temple City," has a history spanning over 2,000 years with Kalinga architecture at its zenith.
