Sambalpur is the gateway to western Odisha. It is famous world over for its Sambalpuri Sarees (Bandha Kala). The district is named after Goddess Samaleswari. It houses the Hirakud Dam, the longest earthen dam in the world.

Sambalpur has a distinct cultural identity. It was a strong center of resistance against the British under Veer Surendra Sai. It was historically known for its diamond trade (Hirakhanda).
