The Daredevil Pilot

Before entering politics, Biju Patnaik was an ace pilot.

  • Saving Indonesian Leaders: In 1947, on Prime Minister Nehru's request, he flew a Dakota aircraft into Dutch-besieged Indonesia to rescue Vice President Mohammad Hatta and Premier Sutan Sjahrir. For this heroic act, he was given honorary citizenship of Indonesia and the title "Bhumiputra" (Son of the Soil).
  • Freedom Struggle: He dropped political leaflets for freedom fighters and was imprisoned by the British during the Quit India Movement.

Architect of Modern Odisha

As the Chief Minister of Odisha (1961-1963 and 1990-1995), he laid the foundation for the state's industrial growth. His vision led to the establishment of:

  • Paradip Port: Odisha's gateway to global trade.
  • HAL Sunabeda: Bringing aerospace industry to Koraput.
  • Rourkela Steel Plant: Industrialization of the tribal belt.
  • Kalinga Prize: An international award for the popularization of science, entrusted to UNESCO.

Legacy

Biju Babu was known for his fearlessness and deep love for Odisha. He famously said, "To be born poor is not a crime, but to remain so is." His legacy continues to inspire generations to dream big and act fearlessly.
