About Sohini Mishra

Sohini Mishra is an Odia playback singer trained in Hindustani classical music who reached the top six of Indian Idol season 6 in 2012. Based in Mumbai, she has sung in more than 60 Odia films and albums as well as in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam, and won the Best Female Singer award at the 4th Tarang Cine Awards.

Early life and education

Mishra comes from a musical family in Odisha: both her parents are approved artistes of All India Radio, Cuttack. She trained in Hindustani classical vocal music under Pandit Devendra Narayan Satapathy and studied science alongside music, earning an MS in biotechnology from Ravenshaw University, Cuttack. She is herself graded a B-High approved artiste of All India Radio, Cuttack.

Music career

Mishra moved to Mumbai in 2012, where she began by recording advertising jingles before moving on to songs for television. National recognition came the same year on Sony TV's Indian Idol season 6, where she finished among the top six contestants. A film director who heard her during a jingle session later invited her to sing for his film, which she has described as her entry into film playback.

Although classical music remains her strength, she sings across styles. Her first solo album, the Hindi collection Love Rainbow, featured songs written by Mohan Majithia and composed by Om Prakash Mohanty, and she has also recorded many Odia modern songs. In 2019 OdishaBytes reported her Bollywood debut with a duet with Tash M for the comedy Kadke Kamaal Ke, directed by Laxman Singh and starring Rajpal Yadav. At that time she said she was forming a fusion band and had concerts lined up in London and the United States, and she has performed on stage in India and abroad.

Film playback

Mishra has been a steady presence in Odia film music; she told OdishaBytes in 2019 that she had sung in more than 60 Odia films, while expressing regret that singers behind Odia film songs remain little known to audiences in the state. Our database lists her in 25 Odia films, among them Love You Hamesha (2015), Pilata Bigidigala (2015), Tiger (2016), Love 420 (2024) and Namaste Kamala Mago 3 (2025). She has also sung in Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam.

Awards and honours

Mishra won Best Singer (Female) at the 4th Tarang Cine Awards in 2013. Wikipedia also lists a Big FM 92.7 Best Singer award, the Governor's Award (Rajiv Gandhi Forum Award) and a Chief Minister's Award among her honours.
