Questions
How is the Odia date counted?
The Odia calendar is solar: a month begins on the day of the sankranti, when the Sun enters a new sign of the zodiac. Baisakha begins on Maha Vishuva (Pana) Sankranti in mid-April, so 1 Baisakha is the Odia New Year. Months are 29 to 32 days long.
Why can the tithi differ from my panjika by a day?
A day takes the tithi that is current at local sunrise. When a tithi begins or ends close to sunrise, panjikas that use older (surya siddhanta) calculations or a different place can disagree by a day. This converter uses astronomical (drik) positions with the Lahiri ayanamsa and sunrise at Bhubaneswar.
Why is the lunar month name different from other states?
Odisha names lunar months the purnimanta way, from full moon to full moon, so the dark fortnight (Krishna paksha) takes the name of the following month. For example, Janmashtami is Bhadrava Krishna Ashtami in Odisha but Shravana Krishna Ashtami in the amanta reckoning used in much of South and West India.
