Chandipur (ଚାନ୍ଦିପୁର) is a beach village on the Bay of Bengal in Balasore (Baleshwar) district, northern Odisha, about 16 km from Balasore town. Chandipur is famous for its "vanishing sea": the shore slopes so gently that at low tide the water recedes for several kilometres, up to about 5 km according to Odisha Tourism, leaving a wide stretch of rippled seabed that visitors can walk across.
What makes Chandipur beach unusual?
Most beaches show a modest difference between high and low tide. At Chandipur the effect is dramatic: Odisha Tourism's estimates range from about 3 to 5 km of exposed seabed during the ebb, which happens twice a day. Walking out across the wet sand, past shallow pools, shells and small crabs, and then watching the water return is the main experience here. Odisha Tourism notes that the water is muddy and not suited for bathing, so Chandipur is a place for walking, watching and eating rather than swimming. The area is also associated with India's defence research: the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) operates its Integrated Test Range near Chandipur, where many missile trials are carried out.
Top things to see and do in Chandipur
- Walk the seabed at low tide. Check the day's tide timings locally, start walking as the tide goes out, and head back well before it turns.
- Watch sunrise and sunset over the flat, reflective sand.
- Look for coastal wildlife. Odisha Tourism mentions red ghost crabs, starfish and sea urchins, and records that endangered horseshoe crabs are found here; do not pick up or disturb them.
- Visit Balaramgadi. About 3 km north of Chandipur, where the Budhabalanga river meets the sea, Balaramgadi is a busy fishing harbour; Odisha Tourism describes early-morning fish auctions with hilsa, pomfret and large prawns.
- Explore Balasore's colonial past. Odisha Tourism highlights the Dutch tombs inside Barabati High School and an old British cemetery in Balasore town.
When is the best time to visit Chandipur?
Odisha Tourism recommends October to March, when the weather is cool and dry. April and May are hot and humid. The monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, and the Balasore coast is exposed to cyclones, especially in the months just before and after the monsoon; check India Meteorological Department (IMD) warnings before travelling. What to eat in Chandipur
Seafood is the main attraction at the table. Odisha Tourism mentions fresh crabs and prawns at local eateries, and the catch landed at Balaramgadi supplies much of what is cooked here. Try a simple fish curry with rice, or a mustard-based preparation such as machha besara. Balasore's sweet shops also sell Odia favourites like rasagola and chhena poda.
Etiquette and safety
- Watch the tide. The sea returns faster than many visitors expect; do not walk far out as the tide turns.
- Do not swim in the muddy water.
- Respect defence areas. Parts of the coast near Chandipur are used by DRDO's test range. Do not enter restricted zones, and follow any instructions from security staff, especially on days when trials are announced.
- Leave wildlife alone. Crabs and other creatures on the seabed are easily harmed; do not collect them or their shells.
- Avoid plastic litter on the beach and in the estuary.
