Gopalpur-on-Sea (ଗୋପାଳପୁର) is a small seaside town on the Bay of Bengal in Ganjam district, southern Odisha, about 16 km from the city of Brahmapur (Berhampur). Once a busy port, Gopalpur is now known for a quiet, east-facing beach lined with casuarina groves, an old lighthouse and the faded buildings of its trading past.
Why is Gopalpur-on-Sea worth visiting?
Gopalpur suits travellers who want a slower coastal stop than Puri. Odisha Tourism describes the beach as clean and largely secluded, and because it faces east, sunrise over the sea is the main event of the day. The town's history adds interest: tradition holds that Gopalpur's coast was used by seafarers from ancient Kalinga, and in the colonial period it grew into a port linked to the rice trade with Burma. Odisha Tourism notes that Gopalpur served as an embarkation point for soldiers bound for Burma during the First World War. The theme of Odia seafaring is explored further in our page on Odisha's maritime history.
Top things to see and do in Gopalpur
- Walk the beach at dawn. The shoreline is wide and calm in the early morning, and the east-facing aspect gives clear sunrise views. Odisha Tourism discourages swimming because the sea is rough.
- Visit the lighthouse. The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships records that the British administration commissioned a beacon on the beach in 1871, first as a wick lamp on an eight-metre steel mast, upgraded in 1892 and 1925. Storm warning signals were also hoisted on the same mast. Visiting hours are set by the Directorate, so check its official website before you go.
- Explore the old town. Gopalpur still has buildings from its port era. Odisha Tourism notes that the Palm Beach hotel, opened in 1914, was one of the first modern hotels in Odisha and was the Oberoi group's first property after it was acquired in 1948.
- See the morning fish landing. Odisha Tourism suggests an early visit to the fish market, when boats bring in the catch.
- Beach festival. The Ganjam district administration has organised a Gopalpur Beach Festival in recent seasons; dates vary from year to year, so check local announcements.
When is the best time to visit Gopalpur?
October to February is the most comfortable season, with cooler, drier weather and calmer conditions for walking the shore. March to May is hot and humid. The south-west monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, and the Odisha coast is also exposed to cyclones, mainly in the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon months, so keep an eye on India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletins if you travel then. What to eat in Gopalpur
Seafood is the obvious choice in a fishing town, and Odisha Tourism's material on Brahmapur also highlights the area's seafood. Look for simple fish and prawn curries served with rice in local eateries. Brahmapur is a good place to try everyday Odia food such as dalma and, in the hot months, pakhala bhata, and the region's sweet shops sell chhena poda and rasagola.
Etiquette and practical tips
- Do not swim in rough water; follow any warnings from lifeguards or local police.
- The beach is used by fishing communities. Keep clear of boats and nets, and ask before photographing people at work.
- Carry your rubbish back with you; Odisha Tourism asks visitors to travel responsibly and keep the beach clean.
- During cyclone alerts, follow district administration instructions; coastal areas may be evacuated.
