Chilika Lake (ଚିଲିକା ହ୍ରଦ) is a large brackish-water lagoon on Odisha's east coast, spread across Puri, Khordha and Ganjam districts and joined to the Bay of Bengal by a narrow mouth. Travellers visit Chilika for boat trips to see Irrawaddy dolphins, for the huge flocks of migratory birds that winter on its wetlands, and for the island shrine of Kalijai.
This is a visitor guide. For Chilika's geography, ecology and history, read our main page on Chilika Lake.
Why is Chilika Lake worth visiting?
The Chilika Development Authority (CDA) describes Chilika as Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon, covering roughly 906 sq km in the dry season and up to about 1,165 sq km in the monsoon. Chilika was India's first wetland to be designated a Ramsar Site of international importance, on 1 October 1981. It is one of only two lagoons in the world where Irrawaddy dolphins are found, and the CDA says more than a million migratory birds winter here. The lagoon also supports a large community of traditional fishers.
What are the main places to visit on Chilika?
Chilika is too large to see in a single trip. Visitors usually pick one or two bases:
| Base | Where | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Satapada | Puri district, outer channel | Dolphin-watching boat trips, CDA visitor centre, sea mouth |
| Barkul | Khordha district, on the national highway | Boats to Kalijai island and the central lake |
| Balugaon | Khordha district, on the national highway | Rail access, boats run by local operators |
| Rambha | Ganjam district, southern lake | Quieter southern islands, base for the Rushikulya turtle coast |
| Mangalajodi | Khordha district, northern wetlands | Winter birdwatching by country boat |
Satapada and the dolphins
Satapada is the gateway to the outer channel, where boats go out to look for Irrawaddy dolphins. The CDA runs an interpretation centre here. Boat trips from Satapada often continue towards the sea mouth and the long sand bar that separates the lagoon from the sea. Dolphin numbers are counted each year in a joint census by the Forest Department and the CDA; sightings vary with season and water conditions.
Kalijai island
Kalijai is a small island with a shrine to the goddess Kalijai, popular with pilgrims, and is usually reached by boat from Barkul or Balugaon.
Nalabana Bird Sanctuary
Nalabana Island, about 15.57 sq km, is notified as a bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act and is one of the main congregation sites for wintering birds in the centre of the lagoon. Lonely Planet notes that birds gather here from November to mid-January.
Mangalajodi
Mangalajodi, on the northern edge of Chilika, is one of the oldest fishing villages of the region. The CDA notes that its wetlands are designated as an important bird conservation area, and every winter hundreds of species of migratory and resident birds can be seen from slow country boats poled through the reeds. Mangalajodi is often described in travel writing as an example of community-led conservation, with villagers who once hunted birds now working as guides and boatmen.
When is the best time to visit Chilika Lake?
- The CDA lists October to February as the best time to visit.
- Migratory birds arrive with the northern winter and are present in good numbers from about November to February, which is the prime season for Nalabana and Mangalajodi.
- Dolphin trips from Satapada run through much of the year, but calm winter mornings make sightings and boating more comfortable.
- Summer (March to June) is hot, with glare on the water; go out early.
- Monsoon brings rough weather and boat services may be suspended on stormy days.
How do I reach Chilika Lake?
According to the CDA, the main access points are Balugaon, Barkul and Rambha on the national highway (old NH-5, now part of NH-16) and Satapada near Puri.
| From | Balugaon | Barkul | Rambha | Satapada |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bhubaneswar | about 96 km | about 105 km | about 130 km | about 105 km |
| Berhampur | about 84 km | about 75 km | about 50 km | |
| Puri | about 117 km | about 105 km | about 113 km | about 48 km |
- By air: Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar.
- By rail: Balugaon and Rambha stations, on the main line between Bhubaneswar and Berhampur.
- By road: Buses on the highway stop at Balugaon, Barkul and Rambha; Satapada is reached by road from Puri.
What food should I try at Chilika?
Chilika is a major fishery, so lakeside eateries in Satapada, Balugaon and Barkul serve fresh prawns, crabs and fish prepared in Odia styles. Vegetarians can find dalma and rice in most places. Try machha besara, fish cooked in a mustard paste, if you eat fish.
Etiquette and responsible travel
- Use registered boats (OTDC operates boats at Barkul and Rambha) and insist on life jackets.
- Ask boatmen not to chase or encircle dolphins; keep engines low near them.
- At Mangalajodi and Nalabana, keep noise down, do not feed birds, and do not ask boatmen to flush birds for photographs.
- Carry your rubbish back; plastic is a serious problem for the lagoon.
- Kalijai is a place of worship: dress modestly and remove footwear at the shrine.

Plan your visit
Choose your base by interest: Satapada for dolphins (an easy day trip from Puri), Mangalajodi for winter birding (best at dawn), and Barkul or Rambha for Kalijai and the islands. A night by the lake gives you early-morning light, when wildlife is most active. For a plan tailored to your dates and interests, request a custom itinerary at /travel/plan.
