Geographical Indication tags of Odisha (ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ଜିଆଇ ଟ୍ୟାଗ) are legal registrations under India's Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999. A GI tag means a product's name can only be used for goods made in a defined area of Odisha. As of the GI Registry's state-wise list dated 31 December 2025, Odisha has 26 registered entries. They cover handloom textiles, handicrafts, farm produce and foods. A further GI, Araku Valley Arabica Coffee, is registered jointly with Andhra Pradesh.

What is a GI tag?

A Geographical Indication identifies goods whose quality, reputation or character comes from where they are made. The Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai examines applications and enters approved names in the register. The applicant is usually a producers' body, cooperative or government agency. Producers in the area can then apply to become authorised users. Only goods from the defined area that follow the registered method may lawfully carry the name.

For a buyer, a GI name is a guarantee of origin, not of quality. It means, for example, that a sari sold as Bomkai should come from the registered Bomkai weaving area.

Complete list of GI tags of Odisha

The table follows the official state-wise list published by Intellectual Property India (as on 31 December 2025). Product names are given as they appear in the register, which still uses the older spelling "Orissa" for some early entries. "Year registered" is shown only where the registration date could be checked against the GI Registry's own record or a reputable news report from the time. A dash means that year could not be independently confirmed. The application filing year from the official list is given for every entry.

How many GI tags does Odisha have?

The answer depends on how entries are counted, which is why published totals vary.

  • The official list shows 26 entries for Odisha as of 31 December 2025.
  • One of these, the Orissa Pattachitra logo, is a separate registration of the logo for an existing GI. Counting distinct products only gives 25.
  • Some reports also add the jointly registered Araku Valley Arabica Coffee.

News reports at the time match the official list. PTI reported in January 2024 that seven new registrations took Odisha's total to 25. Cuttack Rupa Tarakasi in March 2024 was reported as the 26th.

Handloom textiles

Nine of Odisha's GIs are handwoven textiles. The state handloom cooperative Boyanika says it trades in all nine. They include the tie-dyed Orissa Ikat and Sambalpuri Bandha, the temple-linked Khandua silk of Nuapatna, the extra-weft Bomkai saree, and Kotpad handloom, Odisha's first GI. For background on the wider Sambalpuri tradition, see the Sambalpuri saree.

Handicrafts

Handicraft GIs include Pattachitra cloth painting, Pipili appliqué, Konark stone carving and Cuttack's silver filigree. The January 2024 registrations recognised two tribal art forms from Rayagada district. These are the Lanjia Saura wall painting (also called idital) and the embroidered Kapadaganda shawl of the Dongria Kondh.

Agricultural and food products

Food GIs from Odisha include the sweets Odisha Rasagola and Kendrapara Rasabali, as well as Dhenkanal Magji, a sweet made from buffalo-milk cheese. Odisha Khajuri Guda is a jaggery made from date-palm sap in Gajapati district. Similipal Kai Chutney from Mayurbhanj is made with red weaver ants. Agricultural GIs include Kandhamal Haladi (turmeric), Koraput Kalajeera (an aromatic rice), Nayagarh Kanteimundi (a thorny brinjal), and the Ganjam Kewda flower along with its distilled essence, rooh.

Crafts that are not GI-registered

Several well-known Odisha crafts were not on the Registry's list of Odisha GIs as of 31 December 2025. These include Dhokra metal casting, sabai grass craft and palm-leaf engraving as a separate craft. Products sold under these names may still be authentic handmade work. They simply have no GI protection.

How to check a GI claim

  • Search the product on the GI Registry's public search at search.ipindia.gov.in to see its status, applicant and registered area.
  • Ask the seller which authorised user or cooperative made the product.
  • Buy from the state cooperatives Boyanika (handloom) and Utkalika (handicrafts), or browse Odiapedia's curated authentic Odisha products.
