The Odia script (ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଲିପି) is one of the most beautiful writing systems in India. Its distinctive rounded, curvilinear letters evolved over centuries from the Brahmi family of scripts.
Why Are Odia Letters Round?
The most widely cited explanation is that Odia was traditionally written on palm leaves (tala patra) by incising them with a stylus. Long straight strokes tended to tear the leaves along their grain, so scribes developed smooth, flowing curves.
The Odia Vowels (ସ୍ୱରବର୍ଣ୍ଣ)
The traditional Odia alphabet lists 14 vowels, although ୠ, ଌ and ୡ are rarely used in modern writing. Note that Odia pronunciation differs from Hindi: ଅ is a rounded sound, and ଇ/ଈ and ଉ/ଊ are not usually distinguished by length in everyday speech.

Odia consonants are organized into groups (ବର୍ଗ) by place of articulation, followed by unstructured consonants. Counts of 35 to 38 consonants are common, depending on the convention used:
