This Odisha 5-day itinerary (ଓଡ଼ିଶା ପାଞ୍ଚ ଦିନର ଭ୍ରମଣ ଯୋଜନା) extends the classic Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark circuit with a boat day on Chilika Lake and time in the craft villages of Pipili and Raghurajpur. It suits first-time visitors who want temples, crafts and some nature without long drives, and it is most comfortable from October to March; November to February is the main season for migratory birds on Chilika.

Day 1: Bhubaneswar, the temple city

Begin at the Lingaraj Temple, then visit the Mukteswar and Rajarani temples nearby, both noted for their carving. After lunch, climb the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, Jain rock-cut cells on two low hills on the city's western side.

Food to try: a full Odia meal with dalma and seasonal fish curry.

Practical tips:

  • Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the Lingaraj Temple's sanctum; a designated viewing platform outside is available to them.
  • If you add Nandankanan Zoological Park, avoid Mondays: the zoo and its Botanical Garden close every Monday, according to the official website.

Day 2: Dhauli and Pipili on the way to Puri

Stop first at Dhauli, approximately 8 km south of Bhubaneswar, to see Emperor Ashoka's rock edicts and the rock-cut elephant, then the Peace Pagoda on the hilltop. Continue to Pipili, approximately 18 km from Bhubaneswar, where workshops make brightly coloured Pipili appliqué for temple festivals and homes. Puri is approximately 60 to 65 km from Bhubaneswar in all. Check in and walk on the beach in the evening.

Food to try: fresh sea fish at the Puri seafront.

Practical tips:

  • Buy appliqué directly from workshops if possible and ask about the materials; quality varies.
  • Swim only at guarded stretches of beach.

Day 3: Jagannath Temple and Raghurajpur

Visit the Jagannath Temple early in the morning. In the afternoon, drive to Raghurajpur, approximately 12 to 14 km from Puri, a village of painters known for Pattachitra on cloth, palm-leaf etching, papier-mâché masks and the Gotipua dance tradition. Artists often show visitors how the natural colours are prepared.

Food to try: Mahaprasad from the Ananda Bazar inside the temple complex, for those permitted entry, and rasagola.

Practical tips:

  • Entry to the Jagannath Temple is restricted to Hindus.
  • A dress code has applied since 1 January 2024: shorts, half pants, torn jeans, skirts and sleeveless clothes are not permitted.
  • Mobile phones and cameras are prohibited inside the temple.

Day 4: Chilika Lake from Satapada

Leave Puri early for Satapada, approximately 50 km away on the eastern side of Chilika Lake, the large brackish-water lagoon that became India's first Ramsar wetland in 1981. Boats from Satapada head towards the lake's mouth, where Irrawaddy dolphins are often seen, and can include a stop at Rajhans island, which Odisha Tourism describes as a virgin island in the lagoon. Return to Puri in the afternoon.

Food to try: Chilika prawns or crab, cooked in Odia style at Satapada.

Practical tips:

  • Boats are run by local boat associations, with fares varying by boat size and duration. Agree the route and duration before boarding.
  • Mornings are calmer and better for dolphin sightings. Ask the boatman to keep a respectful distance from the dolphins and to avoid chasing them.
  • Carry a hat and sunscreen; there is little shade on the water.

Day 5: Konark and back to Bhubaneswar

Drive approximately 35 km along the coast from Puri to the Konark Sun Temple, the 13th-century chariot-shaped temple of the Sun god and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Walk to nearby Chandrabhaga beach if time allows, then continue approximately 65 km to Bhubaneswar for your onward journey.

Food to try: chhena jhili from sweet stalls along the Konark to Pipili road.

Practical tips:

  • The Sun Temple is an ASI-protected, ticketed monument. Check the ASI website for current timings and fees.
  • Leave enough buffer for the drive to the airport or railway station, as traffic can slow the last stretch into Bhubaneswar.

Customise this trip

To slow the pace, add a night at Konark or a second day in Puri. Birdwatchers visiting in winter can swap the Satapada boat trip for Mangalajodi on Chilika's northern edge. With two more days, the 7-day Odisha itinerary adds a wildlife stop. Use the Odiapedia trip planner to build your own version.

Plan your visit

For more on the lake, read the Chilika Lake travel guide. Boat fares, monument timings and temple rules change, so confirm details with Odisha Tourism, the temple administration or the ASI shortly before you travel.
