Hirakud Dam (ହୀରାକୁଦ ବନ୍ଧ) is a major earthen dam across the Mahanadi river, about 10 km from the city of Sambalpur in western Odisha. Hirakud Dam is a multipurpose project that provides flood control, irrigation and hydroelectric power, and its vast reservoir has been a Ramsar-listed wetland since 2021.
Why is Hirakud Dam famous?
Hirakud Dam's main section is about 4.8 km long, and with the earthen dykes on both flanks the whole structure runs for about 25.8 km. Odisha Tourism calls it the world's longest earthen dam. The foundation stone was laid on 15 March 1946 by Sir Hawthorne Lewis, Governor of Odisha; construction was completed in 1953 and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the dam on 13 January 1957. The reservoir behind it is one of the largest artificial lakes in India. According to the Ramsar Sites Information Service, it supports more than 130 bird species and about 54 fish species, irrigates around 436,000 hectares and supports the livelihoods of thousands of fishers.
Top things to see and do at Hirakud
- Gandhi Minar and Jawahar Minar: two observation towers, one at each end of the dam, give long views over the reservoir and the Mahanadi valley. Odisha Tourism refers to the second tower as Nehru Minar.
- Drive or walk along the dam: the road along the crest is one of the best ways to appreciate the scale of the structure.
- Sunrise and sunset: the open water makes Hirakud a popular spot for photography at either end of the day.
- Birdwatching: in winter, migratory ducks and other waterbirds gather on the reservoir.
- Boating and nature activities are offered around the reservoir at the Debrigarh side (see below); check what is operating when you visit.
Odisha Tourism lists the dam as free to visit and suggests two to three hours. Its listed hours at the time of writing were 6 am to 6 pm, but security rules and access can change at a working dam, so confirm locally. Photography of some installations may be restricted; follow signs and security staff.
When is the best time to visit Hirakud Dam?
October to February is the recommended period, according to Odisha Tourism. Days are pleasant and migratory birds are present. From March to May western Odisha is very hot. In the monsoon (June to September) Sambalpur receives heavy rain; when the reservoir fills, the authorities may open the dam's sluice gates, a sight that attracts many visitors, but access may then be controlled for safety.
